Our Great Turkeys
2009 was a great success for Autumn Grove Farm's Bourbon Red Turkeys. The birds received many, many compliments from our customers
praising the table birds for their fantastic taste. Due to the standards of Autumn Grove Farm and the commitment to provide a bird
table worthy, we, again, will only have a limited number of birds to offer. For 2010, all our birds will be USDA processed the week of
Thanksgiving and will be offered fresh or frozen. If you chose a fresh bird, it will be available EARLY Wednesday, November 24th or
possibly late Tuesday, November 23rd. Pickup dates will be confirmed mid to late October. We will have a Richmond/Midlothian pickup site..
The Bourbon Red is currently on the "watch" list by
albc-usa.org and is considered a heritage breed turkey. It originated in Bourbon County, Kentucky and dates back to the late 1800's.
The Bourbon Reds are hardy and excellent foragers which means they are strong healthy birds which acclimate well to Virginia's
warm summers and cold winters. They consume a large part of their diet direct from the pasture (grasses and insects). They are
very social birds which can and do mate naturally unlike the the vast majority of the commercially raised broad breasted turkeys.
Their feed supplement ration is custom mixed to provide a higher standard of dry feed and many of the ingredients are approved
by organic certification organizations. The Bourbon Reds have been selected by many top chefs for their excellent taste.
The birds free range from early morning to late evening. To protect the flock from harmful predators the birds are
herded back to their mobile pens each night and moved daily to ensure cleaniness and good health for the birds and the pastures.
We limit the number of birds per pen and each cage is equipped so the birds can and do roost. Our goal is raise our beef and
turkeys in the most natural manner. The birds are watered twice daily in clean hanging water tanks to ensure fresh water free from turkey waste.
Again, Autumn Grove Farm strives to practice good land management and by rotating our cattle and turkeys the
soil is allowed to absorb the nutrients without over saturation or run off into our natural water supply of ponds, creeks,
streams, and rivers. Our birds have their own private security system - Mike and Rosie - their guard donkeys.
